My Story

From Sickness for Life to Healing and Possibilities.
It wasn’t sickness, disease or diagnoses though, that started the shift in direction in my life.
I was in my early 20’s and pursing a career and busy with work, college, and social life. Weight began to creep on as I binged on late night study energy of candy, and snacks, and probably the stressful hours and I was keeping. So when my oldest sister introduced me to this book about a diet, I was interested.
All my other half hearted attempts at dieting had only lasted a few days, and really I just wanted to eat what I wanted. She had the book and was implementing it in her life and it seemed good to me. So I ordered the book and read it in spurts and on down time at my night shift CNA job.
It was a huge book. I don’t think I had ever completely read a book that size before. Especially one that wasn’t a novel. But I was captivated from the beginning and consumed the book in record time for its size. That book was the original edition of Trim Healthy Mama by Pearl Barrett, and Serene Allison. These authors were funny and had a captivating writing style. It was so loaded with information, but it was easy to understand. I think it captivated my love for human biology science and how our bodies work.
I started implementing the plan they laid out, even before I had finished the book. The science they shared made so much sense to me. I realized I loved the science of nutrition and learning the macronutrients in food was easy. I’m not sure how soon I soon started to see weight loss, but If I could have desserts without the sugar guilt, because they where actually good for me, and bread and butter, and all the things we think we often have to avoid to lose weight or ‘get healthy’, I was hooked.
I changed my way of eating and incorporated it through working, at social events and even traveling. I did lose 15 of the 20 pounds I wanted to loose over the next 6 months. But in that time I started to experience health issues that I hadn’t previously. So I began to got to doctor after doctor, looking for the answers to what was causing what I believed to be ovarian cysts bursting.
The disease hadn’t just started though. What I hadn’t realized previously was that I already was dealing with symptoms of endometriosis, and had been for many years. Possibly the stress of collage, dating, and work life combined with previous poor diet choices brought things to a new level.
My PCP prescribed me thyroid mediation to hopefully reduce some of the hormone struggles. I went to multiple gynecologists looking for the cause of the endometriosis, but was only offered birth control pills and injections, pain medication, and surgery options. A CAT scan showed multiple cysts on both ovaries. I didn’t want the risk of loosing an ovary before I even had the opportunity to become a mother. I wasn’t looking for pain medication, I already knew how to manage that. I didn’t feel comfortable with the synthetic hormones in birth control pills with the unknowns of what it my do to my hormones, or what side affects I might experience. So I kept looking for answers.
Somewhere in that time, with the understanding and resources that THM lifestyle had opened up to me about health and healing, I began to realize that our bodies are designed to heal, and that disease isn’t a life sentence. I began to research and learn about the power of food in healing and about natural remedies. I began to make changes in my life with the products I used on my skin and cleaned with.
I hadn’t realized that the symptoms I had dealt with hormonally, didn’t have to be that way. I didn’t know it wasn’t normal to crash in the afternoons. I didn’t know acne could be treated with any thing other than skin care products. I didn’t understand why I was still dealing with acne in my early 20’s. I thought bad winter colds where normal.
But as time passed and I ate the THM way. I discovered that I no longer had afternoon crashes. My acne was gone except for an occasional singe pimple. Pain with my period had drastically lessened and I had less unknown pains between periods. I had lost weight and was easily keeping it off. I no longer had intense colds that lasted for weeks. I no longer had migraine like headaches that would occasionally hit from low blood sugar.
I hadn’t understood I was sick, but God had already brought me a tool and resources that changed my life before I even realized I needed it. Healing possibilities had been opened to me, before I realized I need them. I was healing before I realized I had been sick. That speaks to my heart as an incredible gift of goodness and love from a God who sees me.
Healing at deeper levels still took time, I’m still on a healing journey. After I got married I gained back some weight as I was more lenient with my food choices. Then I got pregnant and that has it’s own set of food struggles. But the gift of pregnancy and a child, after being told I probably wouldn’t get pregnant, spoke to me of healing.
My journey still had bumps, like the premie birth of my son, cesarian healing, and then 3 months of sickness from an unknown infection in an ovarian cysts. But through it all my heart firmly believed that healing is possible and is happening because I had already experienced it.
Fast forward to currant day. I have bumped up and down 10 pounds from post infection sickness weight loss. I am currently back down to my post sickness weight, which was also my original weight loss number. But the weight loss has never been a huge concern to me, because I was free to eat good food, that brought me health, and not feel restricted.
I learn as I go what my body needs and how to support it in the season I’m in. I find new details of how I have healed. But more importantly I have walked into more freedom, not only In the food choices I make, but in how I relate to food emotionally.
God has brought me on a healing journey spiritually, and as I learn and step into Truths I hadn’t understood before, that brings emotional healing. Emotional healing brings healing in your relationship with yourself, with how you experience God, and that brings freedom in the way you relate to food.
Often I don’t realize what is available. I don’t know what freedom should look like. But we understand we are struggling. We just don’t know it wasn’t meant to be this way. But God knows and is orchestrating healing and possibilities before we even know what to ask for. As I walk in healing, I know there is more available. At times it looks like set backs or progress isn’t happening, but I hold to the Truth that healing is the way it is supposed to be, and I will see it.
Nutrient dense food, blood sugar balance, and natural products are still important to me. A holistic look as life tells me that I am body soul and spirit. That means each part of me has an impact on my health as a whole. So I pursue more understanding in nutrition, and skin care, and how my mindset and beliefs impact my health.
I love the pursuit of health, wholeness, and freedom in all aspects of life. Im passionate about sharing that with others. I want them to experience the freedom I’m living in. I don’t want food to be struggle any more but something that brings joy, fun, and health. I want natural skin and body care to be easy. I want them to be free from negative thought patterns and impossibilities.
So much is available and that is why I’m here, sharing my story of hope.
Have you experienced sickness or food struggles? What looks possible right now? Can you imagine yourself without that struggle?
